This course aims at exploring the scope and limits of the theory of phrase structure (PS), taking as a starting point the ‘bare’ formulation of Chomsky 1995 et seq. In so doing, we will discuss the puzzles that certain linguistic phenomena still pose for PS theory; in particular, we will concentrate on adjunction (including head movement), parentheticals, and linear order.
