Abstract:
This talk presents an eye-tracking study investigating how Italian-speaking adults interpret ad hoc implicatures and scalar implicatures triggered by a few in real time. Eighty-six typically developing adults (M = 21.66; Range 18;01–33;06) completed a picture selection task while their eye movements were recorded. Results reveal robust derivation of both implicature types (> 96%), alongside delayed processing for scalar implicatures. Taken together, these findings suggest that pragmatic enrichment is highly preferred, yet not cost-free
